New Year, New Projects

notes, roots

My word of the year is roots, and I think it’s already working. While I was making a journal page about it, I got inspired to try some animation, and apparently GIFs are pretty simple! This is what I’d really like to see more of in 2018 – growth and exploration that’s grounded and builds in a natural way.

If you’d like to play around with drawing and animation, it doesn’t get much simpler than GIF paint. And if you use photoshop, you might also be surprised (I was) to learn that there’s an animation mode there – and web comic artist Sarah Andersen has a pretty approachable tutorial about how to use it.

A few other things I’ve been inspired by recently include:

★ This calendar of creative challenges. Love Inktober or Nanowrimo and need more of that kind of motivation? Now you can start your year with a plan.

★ I’m very sympathetic to amateur endeavors, but this list of differences between amateurs and professionals feels fairly insightful. I like to think that I might be moving toward a more professional mindset, and that that could be a good thing.

★ We have psychologist Karl Jung to thank for the concept of synchronicity, but apparently we should also be thanking physicist Wolfgant Pauli. I love reading about this kind of cross-pollination between science and mysticism!

What are your favorite discoveries so far this year?
